All About “Advent”

Question
1.
What is Advent?
In the Catholic Church, Advent is a period
of preparation, extending over four Sundays, before Christmas.
Question
#2 -
3
- What
does the word Advent mean?
- What
three things does Advent refer to?
The word Advent comes from the Latin advenio, "to come
to," and refers to the coming of Christ. It refers, first of all, to our
celebration of Christ's birth at Christmas, secondly, to the coming of Christ
in our lives through grace and the Sacrament
of Holy Communion, and finally, to His Second Coming at the end of time.
Our preparations, therefore, should have
all three comings in mind. We need to prepare our souls to receive Christ
worthily.
First We Fast, Then
We Feast:
Questions #4 - 7
- What was
Advent traditionally known as and what was it preceded by?
- How should
Advent be marked?
- When Does Advent Start?
- Today, what has overtaken Advent, and what has it
done to people?
Advent has traditionally been known as a
"little Lent", and has always been preceded by a time of fasting,
which makes the feast itself more joyful.
As in Lent,
Advent should be marked by increased prayer, fasting,
and good works. While the Western
Church no longer has a
set requirement for fasting during Advent, the Eastern Church, both Catholic
and Orthodox, continues to observe what is known as Philip's
Fast, from November 15 until Christmas.
Sadly, Advent today has been overtaken by
"the Christmas shopping season," so that by Christmas Day, many
people no longer enjoy the feast.
The Symbols of
Advent:
In its symbolism, the Church continues to stress the
preparation for Advent. As during Lent, priests
wear purple vestments, and the Gloria ("Glory to God") is omitted
during Mass.
The only exception is on the Third Sunday of Advent, known as Gaudete
Sunday, when priests can wear rose-colored vestments.
As on Laetare
Sunday during Lent, this exception is designed to encourage us to continue
our prayer
and fasting, because we can see that Advent is more than halfway over.
Questions
#8 -
9
What is the Advent Wreath?
Explaining the Symbols
and Customs of the Advent Wreath
Question
10.
Describe the Advent Wreath

The
Advent wreath is a circular
garland of evergreen branches representing eternity. On that wreath, five
candles are typically arranged. During the season
of Advent one candle on the
wreath is lit each Sunday as a part of the Advent services. Each candle
represents an aspect of the spiritual preparation for the coming of the Lord, Jesus
Christ.

Question #11
Describe the Advent Wreath Candles
Advent Wreath Candles
Set on the
branches of the wreath are four candles: three purple candles
and one pink candle. In the center of the wreath sits a white candle. As a
whole, these candles represent the coming of the light of Christ into the world.
Questions #12
- 15
Tell what color candle is lit each Sunday of Advent, what
it is called, and what it represents. Please Make three rows. Follow the
sample. (See box below. P. 43)
On the first Sunday of
Advent, the first purple
candle is lit. This candle is typically called the "Prophecy Candle" in
remembrance of the prophets, primarily Isaiah, who foretold the birth of Christ. This candle represents hope or expectation in
anticipation of the coming Messiah.
Each week on Sunday, an additional candle is lit. On the second Sunday of Advent, the
second purple candle is lit. This candle typically represents love. Some traditions call this the "Bethlehem Candle,"
symbolizing Christ's manger.
On the
third Sunday of Advent the pink, or rose-colored candle is lit. This
pink candle is customarily called the "Shepherds
Candle" and it represents joy.
On the
fourth Sunday of Advent, the last purple candle is lit. This
candle is often times called the "Angels
Candle", is lit. It represents peace.
On
Christmas Eve, the white center candle is traditionally lit. This candle is
called the "Christ Candle" and represents the life of Christ that has
come into the world. The color white represents purity. Christ is the sinless,
spotless, pure Savior. Also, those who receive Christ as Savior are washed of
their sins and made
whiter than snow.
Celebrating with an Advent wreath during the weeks prior to
Christmas is a great way for Christian families to keep Christ at the
center of Christmas, and for parents to teach their children the
true meaning of Christmas. Another Advent tradition that can be very meaningful
and fun for children is to celebrate with the Jesse Tree.
